2008
Happy new year anglers.
I hope all of you have a prosperous New Year with excellent health and
happiness!
.......well its early
January
and we have had a mix between winter and mild weather. One day last week
we spoke to friends in Arizona. It was 52 degrees here and 32 degrees
there - go figure. The steelhead were on fire today taking fresh skein &
egg sacks. It's the weekend so the streams tend to get a little crowded.
The temperature just got a little warmer after a few cold days allowing some
good access to the water. We are getting inquiries about the 2008
boat fishing. Remember your early bookings ensure prime dates for your
charter party. All of our 2008 Saturdays are already booked so if it is
weekends you are after we can only offer you Sundays. We are now two months away from our annual charter captains
conference. They always supply us with outlooks for the upcoming season.
Anyone who has visited during the last two years knows that the fishing has been
nothing short of spectacular...........good friends, mild winter weather, great
steel heading - it doesn't get any better than this................Captain Art
through mid January..........and
the steelhead trout bite for the last week has just been as good as it gets.
If you are some of the anglers who have visited us for a day on the water you
know what I'm talking about and I'm sure you're not able to describe how good
the fishing has been. Perfect water conditions and trout taking anything
you throw into the water! These conditions have been favorable for the
expert & novice fly or spin fishermen. The weather for the next few days
looks good but beyond that the forecast is calling for bitter cold sustained
temperatures. This will start freezing the rivers and our access will be
eliminated. The next thing we will be waiting for is enough ice to get on
the water. I visited some guys who were trying their luck at smelt fishing
in the harbor. They had only caught a little more than a hand full each.
The smelt fishing has left a lot to be desired in our area for the past few
years.............good friends, great company & excellent trout
fishing.......Captain Art
beginning of February..........warmer
weather has returned for a week or so. This has melted the ice & cleared
the streams. Due to the heavy rains the last couple of days the streams
are not fishable & are very high & muddy, in fact flood warnings are out for the
area & many low lying areas of Conneaut Creek are under water. By the time
this all clears out the long range forecast is calling for it to get very cold
next week. Lets hope we can get a few days of steelhead trout fishing in
before the next freeze. It seems like one thing or three others have kept
us from fishing the last few weeks. The captains conference is now less
than a month away ..........hopefully they will give us good news for the
upcoming boat fishing season.........spring is coming!
Captain Art
through mid March.........
and our winter weather just doesn't want to let up. Last week we had
severe ice storms which downed power lines and left the area without electricity
for a few days. In fact they declared it a disaster area due to the ice
damage. Then two days later we had a wonderful winter storm which dumped
20+ inches of snow on the ground. In spite of all that we did manage to
get a couple of days fishing in this past week. One of the days was a 50+
hookup day of steelhead! It seems we are a couple of weeks behind
2007 in trying to get to spring weather. Soon the steelhead will be
working the riffles. That is my favorite time of the year. Sight
fishing for them is a lot of fun and the trout are usually eager to grab the
bait. Be sure to check out the Lake Erie outlook for 2008 on our general
information page. Good friends, great company & tight lines......God bless
America.....Captain Art
1st week of April...........
My oh my, just where did our steelhead season go? It just seems like
yesterday was October first and the beginning of our steelhead season. Six
months have already passed. Today we had the banquet for the Grand River
Bait & tackle trout tournament. The boat will be out of storage next week
& soon will be ready for the water. The winter has held on this year and I
feel our season is two weeks behind 2007. We will probably have two days
of good trout fishing this coming week - tomorrow and Tuesday. From
Wednesday on more rain with thunderstorms are predicted and will certainly muddy
up the rivers again. It's really something how little good river time we
have had since the end of January. It has either been frozen or muddy.
But as always with the weather we can only take what we're given. Don't
forget the youth trout derby at the Conneaut Fish & Game Club's pond, scheduled
for May 17th. Bring your children for free gifts and refreshments and
hopefully one of them will win the grand prize - a fishing charter on the "Lucky
Strike" Good friends, calm seas & tight lines......God bless
America.....Captain Art
through Mid
May...............the 42 annual
Conneaut, Ohio trout derby is now over. We had a great day with 303 kids
being registered with the first 150 receiving a free rod & reel as well as all
kids getting food & door prizes. These kids had fun catching and keeping
some of the thousands of trout which had been put in the pond for this event.
Unfortunately no one landed the 29" steelhead trout we had put in the water for
a lucky youth angler to win a fishing charter from. But there was plenty
of excitement with the big trout as the kids had hooked it four times today,
three loosing it by getting off the hook & the fourth child's line broke.
If you ever get a chance to have any children you know participate in this event
drop us an email for details. This was the flyer posted at today's event:

CONNEAUT OHIO
There has been a few fish being caught in the Ashtabula, Ohio area but nothing
great to report. The fishing here should get into the swing of things in
the next couple of weeks. Hopefully the warmer weather should arrive and
get the water warmer which will be a big plus. Until then......Good
friends, calm seas & tight lines......God bless America.....Captain Art
through Mid
June...............finally our weather
has heated up and so has the fishing. The perch and walleye have
been coming in decent numbers. As Lake Erie continues to warm and get into
the summer pattern the fishing should follow and heat up as well. We had a
recent traveler named Scott Mellinger who came all the way from Northglenn
Colorado to find the elusive trophy walleye to put on the wall. Lucky
enough he found it! Ashtabula Ohio continues to produce true trophy sized
fish. The walleye have been in the upper 25' of water and we have been
catching them using small spoons and jet divers. We had a group two
days ago who were lucky enough to land a couple walleye which measured 31" -
truly fish which some people may wait a lifetime to catch and never will.
Hopefully we can be fortunate enough to fulfill your fishing dreams as well.
Until then......Good friends, calm seas & tight lines......God bless
America.....Captain Art
wow - the beginning of July...............although
our weather has been a little crazy this year the walleye bite in Ashtabula Ohio
is now in full swing with limit catches coming in daily like the picture below.
The fish have moved further offshore and gone deeper requiring different tactics
than only 1 1/2 weeks ago. Wire lining off planer boards and dipsy divers
have been the ticket. If anyone has been wanting to get after these fish,
which by the way have been just prime size, I can only tell you that the time is
now. The fishing we have had this past week just doesn't get any better.
We have some weekdays and afternoon charters available. Call to see if we
can accommodate your group and date. The perch have also been
co-operating. Yesterday we had a group from out of town who lit them up
and caught their limit which were good sized fish. We wish to thank
everyone who has visited this year and hopefully we lived up to your
expectations and showed you why Ashtabula Ohio continues to be the destination
for trophy sized fish and Lake Erie backs it's reputation as the walleye capital
of the world! Until then......Good friends, calm seas & tight
lines......God bless America.....Captain Art

August 4th...............anyone who
fishes Lake Erie knows the place to be is Ashtabula Ohio.......limits of walleye
and yellow perch have continued for the past two months and the bite has just
been on fire. The fish have moved around a bit but have held well in our
area. The walleye have been holding very deep in the water due to bait and
water conditions. The yellow perch have been a little further offshore
than we may usually find them.
Some of the trips have captured their fish so
fast it makes their head spin. I believe the reason you must be here is to
catch fish, so welcome aboard and let's get the job done & leave the rest for
the fish cutters. Most of the walleye are just prime size with some of the
catch being true trophy sized fish. In the past couple of weeks we have
had a few which topped the scales at over 11 pounds and 30" lengths. I
really like to see fish this size on the wall as the true trophies they were.
The fuel crisis has hurt us all. I
understand the difficulty it brings to all my customers just to get here.
I want to thank everyone who has visited us so far.........your generosity and
tips have eased the pain at the pumps and helped the LUCKY STRIKE to remain to
be a successful Lake Erie charter boat - hopefully for many years to come.
Good friends, calm seas & tight
lines......God bless you all and God bless America.....Captain Art
Can you believe it.....today is Labor day.....
and the Lake and fishing are both absolutely
incredible!
Recently our harbor has experienced some
tragedies. First there was a fire in the silos which has shut down some of
the shipping yards scales and operations for our large ships coming to
Ashtabula.
Next River Marine, which is our prime
stopping point for fish cutting, fishing licenses, fuel & accessories has
literally fallen into the river and been forced to cease business operations.
Only the fish cutting is still open. I feel terrible for the owners.
Not only has their business been shut down but there is a very expensive future
to have everything repaired and put them back in business again. There
were also local charter boats whose docks were sunk and they had to find
dockage. For everyone involved there.......I'm sorry and I hope insurances
will get you all back in order and functional.
Now about our fishing.......Not only are
limit catches coming in but the size has been better with the heaviest coolers
thus far returning to dock. We have had good success with our perch
charters but we have run far more walleye charters so far. The last few
days have been stable weather after about two weeks of strong winds blowing from
every direction. This got the walleye back in order and what an incredible
bite they have been on. They have been really putting on the feed bag.
The fish have continued to be very deep so our line sets have increased.
What this means is you have to reel in more line to get the fish to the boat.
People think that walleye are easy......not necessarily the case. Walleye
are not good fighters but they are strong swimmers. Couple that with fish
which are over 60' down and you anglers have some reeling to do. Think
walleye aren't tough? Come try them in their own turf when they are that
deep. On the negative side we have recently been traveling triple the
distance than we have for the past two months. Simple math - triple the
distance = triple the fuel. I wish to thank those of you who understand
that and have given some very nice tips which help cover the fuel crisis we have
all been in.
Good friends, calm seas & tight
lines......God bless you all and God bless America.....Captain Art
End of October - season
closing...............my good
friends.........just where did the season go? It flew by for myself & most
of my colleagues. All I can say is, "what an awesome fishing season - it
just doesn't get any better." Those of you who visited know what I'm
talking about and those of you who did not missed a special fish catching year!
I'm looking forward to seeing many of you again in 2009. Remember to book
your charters as early as possible to secure the dates you are looking for.
This is especially important for those of you who need weekends as there are
only so many to go around.
Meanwhile our wonderful Lake Erie will
continue it's reputation as "the walleye capital of the world" and my home port,
Ashtabula, Ohio certainly upholds it's reputation as a world class destination
for true trophy sized fish. Once again thank all of you for being such
good customers. Your support and generosity assures the LUCKY STRIKE being
your charter boat and myself your captain for many years to come.
Good friends, calm seas & tight
lines......God bless you all and God bless America.....Captain Art
