Ohio fishing guides for steelhead trout

We enjoy catching steelhead trout primarily on fly gear.   We do encourage the novice to try fly fishing.   It's to your advantage when steelhead fly fishing to use the proper tackle. A well-balanced fly rod and reel, and a good quality steelhead fly line are a must when fishing steelhead waters. The length and weight of your fly rod is very important because it needs to work and feel right for you. If you have done any type of fly-fishing, you should be able to tell when you find the right rod. You don't want a rod that is too light nor do you want one that is too long or too heavy. You need a rod that you are able to fish with for 5 to 7 hours a day and not get tired.

From the fall of the year when our charter boat gets put away for the winter until the spring when we are getting the boat ready for the new season you can find our captain guiding hunting trips and steelhead trout fishing the Lake Erie tributaries.  Fly and spinning rod fishermen have a world class stream fishery to enjoy catching the lightning runs and acrobatics Ohio steelhead fishing has to offer.

You can get Lake Erie fishing reports for steelhead trout by joining our mailing list or call us for a guided day on the streams.  Those interested in joining our free newsletter and Lake Erie fishing report please see our news page to sign up.  The policy of LUCKY STRIKE is we will never sell our give out your email address.

Ohio's Lake Erie Steelhead Fishing

The Division of Wildlife annually stocks five Lake Erie tributary streams with 6-8" yearling Little Manistee River (Michigan) strain of steelhead. These fish migrate out into Lake Erie and spend the summer in the cooler part of the lake, before returning to streams during the fall through the spring. Steelhead trout caught by anglers in the streams typically average 25" long and weigh 5-6 pounds. These fish have usually spent 2-3 summers out in the lake (see growth chart below). But there are a good number of fish that are over 30 inches and weigh more than 10 pounds.

Steelhead anglers should enjoy another year of good fishing in Ohio’s Lake Erie open waters and in tributaries throughout the fall, winter, and spring months.  Peak summer steelhead action on Lake Erie can be found offshore from June through August between Vermilion and Conneaut, with catches measuring 17 to 29 inches.  Most Lake Erie anglers troll for steelhead in deep waters using spoons with dipsy divers or downriggers until fish move close to shore in the fall.  The daily bag limit remains at five fish per person from May 16 to August 31, and two fish per angler between September 1 and May 15, with a 12-inch minimum size limit throughout the year.

Landing these big fish on light tackle such as light spinning rods and fly rods is awesome!  Check with your auto or homeowners insurance as you need travelers insurance to participate in a Lake Erie steelhead trout guide trip.

That's a pretty nice steelhead Grandpa.....where did all the ice go so quick?  The onset of spring after ice out can be an awesome time to book a guided stream trip.  The fish start to move up on the rocks and are usually eager to grab a hold of a presentation.  This is one of my favorite times of the year for the Lake Erie steelhead trout.

A couple of Lake Erie steelhead trout over 10 # through the ice.  Notice how these fish were bright silver colored.  Anglers must use extreme caution while fishing under these conditions because the ice can be very unpredictable.

The daily bag limit of 2 steelhead trout and salmon in the aggregate is valid from September 1st through May 15th in Ohio.  Pennsylvania anglers may take three.

A Pennsylvania limit of winter steelhead.  We had a wonderful winter steelhead trout season with many fish limits caught.  Most fishermen choose catch and release but a few of these winter trout were saved for anglers smokers.
